UPDATE January 2015

Results of the Calls in 2014

In December 2014, the Public Authorities Board (PAB) of the JU reached the funding decision on the Calls 2014 that will be officially notified to the Project Coordinators in January 2015. The PAB is composed of representatives of the ECSEL Participating States together with the European Commission (representing the European Union). A total of approximately 155M€ EU and 145 M€ of national funding will be granted to twelve proposals (six research and innovation actions – RIA, and six innovation actions – IA) arising from the Calls ECSEL- 2014-1 an ECSEL-2014-2. The total eligible costs of the proposals selected approach 710 M€.

The ECSEL JU succeeded in executing the two calls while merging the former ENIAC and ARTEMIS Joint Undertakings and including activities of the European Technology Platform on Smart System Integration, EPoSS – all this in the short time since its inception on 27 June 2014.

The Governing Board amended the Work Plan and the corresponding 2014 budget to allow for awarding the EU grants in line with the funding decisions adopted by the PAB.

From the Field

The Executive Director, Andreas Wild, participated in the ARTEMIS-IA Pre-brokerage event in Vienna on 10 December 2014, together with a significant attendance from the embedded/cyber-physical systems community. He also attended the AENEAS Support Group meeting on 16 December 2014 addressing mainly specific topics relevant for the next year calls for proposals.

The ECSEL JU office had exchanges with the Italian regions of Abruzzo (2 December 2014) and Lombardy (4 December 2014), as follow-on from contacts made during the ECSEL/ERRIN event on Smart Regional Financing of KETs of last November, regarding possible collaboration in projects arising both from the 2014 and from future calls. The ECSEL JU programme has been presented in the “techUK” briefing in London, also attended by Myrddin Jones, ECSEL JU vice-chair of the PAB, who presented the “InnovateUK” programme.

Next Steps

With the (quite exciting) experience of the Calls in 2014 behind us, the ECSEL JU PAB has set up a working group to analyse and fine-tune the procedures to follow in 2015 and beyond. The first meeting is already planned in January.

The 2015 Call will be issued after the Public Authorities Board will conclude the activities of the Working group and the Governing Board will adopt the corresponding Work Plan 2015 by the end of February. It is anticipated that this will be possible in the first half of March, provided that the ECSEL Participating States will have communicated their budgetary pre-commitments.
